VANCOUVER – SEATTLE – PORTLAND
Urban Design in the Cascadian Region:
Designing Sustainable Districts
June 1-12, 2013.
Vancouver
The study trip program included visits to Vancouver's Granville Island, False Creek, Gastown, Olympic Village and Yaletown neighbourhoods, and the UBC Campus.
The visit included lectures and tours by professors Patrick Condon and Cynthia Girling from the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture of the University of British Columbia (UBC), and was organized with the help of school director Leslie van Duzer, and RA Joanna Chun (CUHK). The group also attended a presentation by Westbank Corp., a local real estate developer. Here different strategies for urban regeneration and the design of new districts were compared.
Seattle
The program in Seattle was organized with the generous help of A-P Hurd, the author of The Carbon Efficient City from the University of Washington. The group also met with Liz Dunn and Scott Shapiro, developers of the Capitol Hill district, discussing zoning, politics, land assemblies and financing models. At the South Lake Union Discovery Center, Lori Mason Curran from Vulcan Inc. presented an overview of the development. Architect Jim Greenfield guided the group in a neighbourhood tour discussing human scale interfaces for large developments.
Portland
The Portland section of the trip included visits to the Pearl District, known for its extensive urban renewal and use of old buildings, as well as the South Waterfront, a high-rise development on former industrial land following Vancouver's model. In addition the group visited the Portland Campus of the University of Oregon and followed a lecture by Prof. Hajo Neis.
