A Visit to UC Berkeley, 16-18 Feb 2016

In mid-February 2016, a delegation led A by CUHK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Sung, visited UC Berkeley to further strengthen collaborations on research and teaching in two major areas:

Prof Edward Ng and Prof Renchao were joined the delegation with Prof Gabriel Lau, Director of CUHK’s Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability and Prof. Steve Yim of the Department of Geography and Resource Management. They had a meeting with Dr. Nicolas Dirks, Chancellor of Berkeley. Together they explored the possibility of joint research and teaching programmes on the two aforementioned areas with UC Berkeley and discussed the future opportunity of CUHK to join the innovative Berkeley Global Campus project.

The delegates were invited to meet with Dr. Stenfano M. Bertozzi, Dean of the School of Public Health, and his colleagues to learn the success of Berkeley’s online PH programme. There was some discussion on the possibility of a joint teaching programme and collaboration. The group was also invited to visit the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). LBNL shared their research on Chinese cities’ role in GHG reduction and expressed interest in CUHK’s work on micro-environment in urban planning.  Besides, an interesting multi-disciplinary architectural training model and a good model of technology transfer was learnt at the College of Environmental Design and Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society respectively.

The visit ended on a high note with the delegates’ participation in the 2016 Philomathia Forum on Energy & Environment, whose theme was aptly 'Cities and People: Responding to Global Warming'.
