Teaching and logistics
CUHK Teaching Postgraduate Code of Practice may be downloaded from here. Teachers Full-time and part-time faculty of the
School will teach the courses. To ensure that the Programmes
are the best in the field, eminent visiting professors and researchers from
around the world will be invited to contribute. See teachers page. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Mode of “block” teaching For the taught courses, lectures will be offered as block teaching. This has many advantages. Firstly, it is possible to invite eminent overseas instructors to offer courses in the form of intense workshops in the context of their own teaching and research schedule. Secondly, it is easier for PT students, to set aside short but quality time for taking the courses. All classes will be conducted in the evening
and during weekends. Students will be given preparation materials 2 weeks
before the course. It is anticipated that students will read the materials
and come to the class prepared. After
the 1 week block teaching week, students are required to complete the reading
list and assignments within 5 weeks. Student will have email and/or direct
contact with the course instructor during this period. The assignments will
be graded and sent to the external examiner for final assessment. A typical 3 credit lecture course lasts 8
weeks. |

Programme Workshops Organised workshops of focused studies are frequently arranged. They normally last for 1 long weekend (Sat and Sun) of 12 contact hours. They are optional to students of MSc-SENV but can enrich their learning. Subject to the prior approval of the Programme Director, students may attend 3 orgniased workshops of the Programme, and submit an essay related to the workshops that have been taken to the Programme Director to substitute ONE of the elective courses (SENV7005, SENV7006 or SENV7007or SENV7008). Student may late-add for the elective during the LAST semester of his/her nominative study period. Academic advising Please
refer to CUHK Academic Advising Handbook here. Graduate Attributes The University’s taught programmes address societal needs by educating students
to acquire the knowledge that helps them become specialty experts or leaders
in their professions, working for example as senior managers in enterprises,
practitioners in private practices or public organizations, teachers in
educational institutions, or other types of career professionals. The Programmes
expect our graduates to be aware of the latest issues and knowledge related
to sustainable and environmental design.
They should have a good understanding of the key areas of
environmental and sustainable design; with that understanding, they should
have acquired skills allowing them to tackle the passive and integrative
design of buildings in an urban setting in particular, and to improve the
environmental design of the built environment in general. Our graduate should have IT skills adequate
for them to carrying out works related to the subject matter. Through independent studies and the
dissertation work, our graduate should acquire life-long, independent and
critical self-learning skills. They
will know how to independently draw on a wider expertise and knowledge base
in their works. Our graduate should
have acquired the needed vocabulary of the subject matter, be proficient in
English, and have communication and language skills appropriate for them to
be engaged in knowledge exchanges related to the subject matter. Graduates
of the Programmes are expected to already possess
attributes of first-degree holders from CUHK or other leading universities,
for example in domains such as honesty and integrity, in particular academic
honesty, critical and independent thinking, cultivation of global
perspective, desire to serve society, communication and language skills, and
others. Facilities Electronic news, publications, seminars, lectures, conferences and
exhibitions related to the study will be online. Students may enrich their
learning experience by participating in
these outside events. Located in the Design Technology
Laboratory of the School, a reference shelf of important books and
technical materials for the Programmes is available
for self-study. The intention of the
reference shelf is to give students the first point of contact to some of the
key learning materials of their courses. The shelf will be arranged based on
courses. The laboratory has advanced
environmental measurement equipment and a number of high performance
workstations. Students have access to powerful computers and I.T. resources of the
School and the University. The School has licenses of some of the most
commonly used and most powerful software.

||||||||||||||||||||||
Medium The medium of instruction, all notes, assignments and projects will
be in English. Proficiency in English is a pre-requisite. Full Time MSc
Students may be requested to take English lessons if necessary. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Group learning Students will be grouped into small
working units of 4 to 5. A unit should have a mixture of interest and
background so as to facilitate mutual learning among members. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Social activities Informal
gatherings, dinner lectures, and forum sessions may be arranged from time to
time, allowing students to socialise with each
other and to invite their spouses, office colleagues, and friends. |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Research The
School has rich ongoing research projects on environmental and sustainable
studies. Students of the programme will benefit
from this on-going work and may be allowed to participate as part of their
studies. Selected
on-going funded research projects in the School related to the programme are: ⊙ Daylighting Design and Simulation

University Requirements A student is required to discontinue studies
if his/her performance is unsatisfactory.
The definition of unsatisfactory performance is as follows: (a) the cumulative grade point average
is 1.0 or below, or (b) the student fails to have probation
lifted after being put on academic probation for two consecutive terms of
attendance, or (c) additional
requirements laid down by the Graduate Division concerned are not satisfied. On the other hand, a student shall be
put on academic probation if s/he has obtained a cumulative GPA below 2.0 in
the preceding term unless s/he is required to discontinue studies at the
University. A student on academic probation shall be reviewed by the Graduate
Division at the end of the term in which s/he is put on probation, at which
time if s/he has obtained a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above, probation shall
be lifted, otherwise probation shall continue to apply in his/her next term
of attendance unless s/he is required to discontinue studies owing to unsatisfactory
performance. Please also refer to Graduate School
