Session Abstract

Application of BEAM Plus Neighbourhood in Public Housing Development (Fat Tseung Street West)

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) adopts a people-centred approach to provide quality homes for people in need. When designing new public housing developments, HKHA is committed to build for the future by taking into account quality, comfort, sustainability, as well as neighbourhood friendliness. The introduction of BEAM Plus Neighbourhood provides a valuable reference for HKHA to enhance the design of public housing in a wider community scale, as demonstrated by its pilot project of the Subsidised Sale Flats Development at Fat Tseung Street West.

Nostalgic meets Contemporary Planning: Redevelopment of So Uk Estate

Residential design is always about people and their interpretation of a place for living. We were taught in architectural school about design principles that put people first. In practice it becomes more complicated when unit cost and time pressure become exerting an ever greater influence on all our design decisions. In the process of planning and designing for the So Uk Estate redevelopment, we had an blessed opportunity to re-examine what are important for people in the process of transformation to a new community. We have tried to put people first and worked within a very limited budget; experimenting with methods of social engagement, old-fashioned passive design, and hopefully retained something that are precious to generations of people growing up there in close to 50 years of the estate’s history and also the community at large.

Urban Oasis in Industrial Setting: Revitalisation of Industrial Building to Wah Ha Estate

Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) makes its first attempt to convert a 59-year-old match box building Chai Wan Factory Estate (CWFE) to Public Rental Housing.  The biggest challenge of this project is “how to provide a sustainable living environment from a derelict Grade II Historic Building located within an industrial area which is subject to severe noise pollution from nearby industrial buildings and transportation facilities, and at the same time, to maximise the development potential of the site as well as to conserve the historical values of this 59 years old architecture?”

Types of window glazing for Public Housing Development

Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) has been providing affordable public housing in meeting the need of over 30% of the Hong Kong population. Embracing a caring attitude to foster social, economic and environmental sustainability, we adopt passive design to create quality homes for our residents in a green and healthy living environment plus a harmonious community. Since 2012, HA has been conducting study to explore use of different types of window glazing for the public housing flat with a view to optimising a comfortable indoor environment along with the passive design approach. This paper highlights briefly the summary of our findings on the three common types of window glazing (float glass, tinted glass and low-E glass).
