2006 Audi A6 Avant 3.2 FSI
Forget
about VW, after 5 of them, the last one was a Passat V6, I finally decided to
shop for something else. Not that
there is any problem with VW –
on the contrary, all my VW had been surprisingly good – it is just that I think I deserve a
slightly better car now. I went to
an Audi motor show. After looking
very hard, I decided on an A6 Avant.
The saloon version was also very nice, but my sons reminded me that we
have bicycles at home! Actually,
Simon (my son) decided it must be an Audi, Michael (my other son) decided the
style and colour, and I was finally only allowed to
decide on paying it with cash or credit.
Wife was not part of the committee.
She only needed to rubber stamp the decision - later.
The
salesman told me the the car has “Oyster Grey
Metallic outside and Volterra leather inside,
…, auto this, electric that, and so on …”. Like a lot of the presentations I had
heard from architectural students, it just did not make sense. But it sounded alright, and so it must
be good. I must say I had
seen the BMW 5 series and Benz E class.
One felt too “plastic” and like a toy, and the other was too
“excessive” and arrogant.
This Audi gave a sense of classy understatement which I like. “Discreetly expensive” was
what I remembered one of my previous clients told me. This car is surprisingly advanced. I like the picture below and wonder why
our buildings are not designed with such care.
The
car has a 3.2 FSI engine. Don't ask
me what is “FSI”, I don't know. I guess it means it could run on
water. The engine gives 255 bhp making it by far the most powerful car I have
owned. Not that nowadays I need to
drive quickly; the sense of having power in reserve is always good. The car also has a “Multitronic” gearbox meaning that it is an auto but
behaves like a manual. Again, it
sounds like one of my student’s presentations. I have been told it has been voted
World Car of the Year, so it cannot be too
bad. The car is with me since 16
March 2006.
