Project Background

Gaobu is one of the Dong villages, located on the Pingtan River in Tongdao County, Hunan Provinces, Like many other Chinese villager, Gaobu is challenged by ‘Village Hollowing’ that as a consequence of mass migration from the countryside to the city, villages are rapidly disappearing. While the working-age population migrates for jobs int eh city, children are left in the village, taken care by their grandparents.

Prof. Peter W. Ferretto and his team had come to realize that something can be done to help preserve and restore this beautiful community, and to offer an educational incubator, a house for children to learn and gain knowledge through playing – Book House, in Gaobu.
